Jade looked carefully at the gathering, Zheng, the Russian, Sergei Rostov and the Italian Fabrizio were missing but she had expected that and they still had a quorum. “This extraordinary meeting has been called because we have important new developments to discuss,” she told the assembled group. “Recent events require all our awareness and action. I note that our former President has not graced us with his presence, therefore under our Articles I formally declare that his term of office is over and will ask Doctor Oboto to take the lead to discuss our next steps.”

“Thank you,” replied Oboto standing up. “As you all know Zheng Wan left us in a predicament. The Artefacts have not been returned so we find ourselves severely compromised. Worse, I have heard that the man called Jochi known to some of you is seriously ill, maybe even dead by now, as a direct result of his actions. I also have to tell you that our Italian colleague, Fabrizio, which incidentally is not his real name, is aligned directly with Zheng and we believe goes under the title of the Professor.”

“What of Sergei Rostov?” asked Dufresne, the French delegate.

“Sergei has not been in contact but unlike the others we have no reason to suspect he is involved in any plotting; in fact he is actively helping us and therefore putting himself at considerable personal risk. All in all a grim story but we must be decisive, I am sure you will agree.”

“Are you sure of all your facts?” asked Stanton, the American, quizzically, “Seems we are proposing strong prescriptive actions.”

“As sure as we can be,” replied Oboto. “Fabrizio has been linked to Zheng’s plans by documents in our possession, so to protect our integrity we have to act. I need your support; we are, to put it plainly, at war.” He looked around as the Chair returned a unanimous vote. “Thank you, now to the good news; there is still time to avert disaster. We have knowledge of the fourth Artefact, called the Confucius Staff, which is the key to finding the Khan’s Prophecy, our heritage.”

“You know where it is?” asked Stanton, his voice booming across the ancient auditorium.

“We think so,” Oboto told him. “What I am about to say to you is not to be minuted as it could compromise actions on the ground, but it is appropriate to share this information with you. For some time now our people in the field have been without direct support; we have corrected this by sending an agent into the field to help. Indeed, I have been involved myself and can tell you we are making progress towards the fourth Artefact currently located in Africa.”

“These people, who are they?” asked Dufresne.

“Guy Tresanton and his partner, Rose Ling. They are being supported by my African fighter, Tapiwa. Make no mistake our very existence is under threat and this direct action is necessary.”

“It is in direct contravention of our charter,” said the Canadian woman Brandy, “it sets a dangerous precedent.
